After decades in the shadows, the Chennai Press Club has re-emerged as a symbol of journalistic unity and perseverance. Reviving its original mandate of welfare and representation, the club recently held its first official election in over two decades--marking a significant moment for the media community in Tamil Nadu.   Founded in 1970 by former Union Minister and DMK leader Murasoli Maran, the club had long faded from active public and institutional life. It wasn’t until December 14, 2024, that a free and fair election--backed by a renewed wave of support from journalists, civil society and media veterans brought it back into focus. “The first poll was conducted in 1999 with new hope, but we do not know if it will soon dim its spark... finally, in 2023, our consistency met the victory line,” said M Haseef, General Secretary of the Chennai Press Club. In the ongoing three-language policy tussle with Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hit out at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Tamil Nadu government, stating that all ministers in the southern state signed letters to him in English despite “saying they were proud of the Tamil language”.
