After 24 years, Chennai Press Club reclaims its voice and vision

By Suganthi Marimuthu in Media News on
After decades in the shadows, the Chennai Press Club has re-emerged as a symbol of journalistic unity and perseverance. Reviving its original mandate of welfare and representation, the club recently held its first official election in over two decades--marking a significant moment for the media community in Tamil Nadu.   Founded in 1970 by former Union Minister and DMK leader Murasoli Maran, the club had long faded from active public and institutional life. It wasn’t until December 14, 2024, that a free and fair election--backed by a renewed wave of support from journalists, civil society and media veterans brought it back into focus. “The first poll was conducted in 1999 with new hope, but we do not know if it will soon dim its spark... finally, in 2023, our consistency met the victory line,” said M Haseef, General Secretary of the Chennai Press Club. He credited the collective push from influential media figures like N Ram of The Hindu, Nakkee

In the ongoing three-language policy tussle with Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hit out at the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Tamil Nadu government, stating that all ministers in the southern state signed letters to him in English despite “saying they were proud of the Tamil language”. He was in TN to inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge linking Rameswaram island with the mainland. Hot Off the Press Divya Chandrababu and Neha LM Tripathi for Hindustan Times reported the PM stating that the central government is working to ensure that the Tamil language and Tamil heritage reach every corner of the world, urging the state government to begin medical courses in the language. “I am surprised when I receive letters from some leaders of Tamil Nadu; none of them are signed in the Tamil language. If you are proud of Tamil, then I would request everyone to at least sign your name in Tamil,” Modi said. The Prime Minister added the central government, under the

By staff writer in Media News on
Resonate Broadcasting is putting 11 regional radio stations across seven Queensland markets up for sale, covering nearly 39 per cent of the state’s population, according to Mumbrella.  The portfolio includes stations such as 4CCC in Charleville and 4GC in Charters Towers, aligned with Southern Cross Austereo’s Hit and Triple M networks. Founded in 2008 by Rex Morris and Guy Dobson, Resonate acquired the stations over several deals with Macquarie Media. Their Hawaiian stations are not included in this sale. Morris, now Triple M Sydney’s content director, said the decision to sell comes after 16 years at the helm. “At the end of the day, we’ve been doing this for 16 years… it’s time for us to sell, and we’ve got other things we might like to explore in the future,” he said, noting there’s no specific buyer in mind but expects interest from a broad range of parties. Despite a dip in national radio ad revenue in 2024, regional radio remained relatively stable, wi
