A desperate rescue operation is underway in Telangana after eight workers were trapped inside the Silasagar Lift Irrigation Scheme (SLBC) tunnel collapse. What began as a routine construction shift quickly turned into a nightmare when a section of the tunnel caved in, leading to a surge of silt and water on Feb 22, 2025. While 52 workers managed to escape, eight more were trapped deeper inside the tunnel and could not find a safe exit before a portion of the roof caved in.   ABC News has gained 731,000 readers in a month, while News.com.au has shed over 400,000, according to the latest Ipsos Iris data which reveals ABC News is the country's most-read news site. It seems ABC Chair Kim Williams''s push for a focus on online news is paying off and certainly anyone familiair with the ABC's daily online news bulletins will have noticed the increase in hard-hitting and broader news coverage.  News.com has long been the top online news website leader so ABC's rise is significant.  ABC saw 12.48 million readers during January, a 6.2% rise from December. News.com.au dropped 3.4% to slide into second, with 11.76 million readers. The ABC isn’t the only outlet to see a leap in readership. Daily Mail Australia’s audience grew 12.1%, to reach 8.65 million, while the Guardian climbed to 7.96 million, an 8.9% increase. SBS News drew an extra 828,000 readers – a 20.4% leap – to pull 4.9 million readers, while BBC.com jumped 21.5% to reach 4.56 million

Big uptick in digital audio ad spend on podcasts and streaming

    Commercial Radio and Audio members (CRA) are reporting 30% year-on-year growth in total digital audio revenue.  And both podcasting and streaming in Australia saw hefty increases in advertising revenue in the past 12 months, compared with last year, with podcasting revenue up 19.1% and streaming ad revenue climbing 16.9%, according to figures just released by IAB Australia (Interactive Advertising Bureau).  According to IAB, total digital audio advertising revenue reached $313 million in calendar year 2024, growing by 18% year-on-year (YOY), and reaching $90 million in the December quarter. Outpacing the broader IAB total digital audio market, The Australian Internet Advertising Revenue Report (IARR), compiled by Price Waterhouse Cooper (PwC), confirms podcast advertising expenditure as the fastest-growing reported format for the second consecutive quarter. Veteran sports journo Suresh Kaushik passes away

Veteran sports journalist and former sports editor at Jansatta, Suresh Kaushik, has passed away. He was 72.  Press Club of India posted a tribute to the stalwart, writing, "We stand with his family and friends in this time of grief and sorrow. We pray to almighty for his soul rests in peace and wish his family immense strength to withstand this situation." Vijay Lokapally, former deputy editor of The Hindu and editorial consultant at Sportstar, expressed his condolences, saying: “Suresh Kaushik, a dear friend, passed away this morning. He was 72 and retired as sports editor of Jansatta. A good footballer, he was an avid cricket lover, too.
