Jackson Ryan on SJAA Residence Program

By Will McLennan in Media News on
The Science Journalists Association of Australia has partnered with the University of Queensland Institute for Molecular Bioscience to set up a “first of its kind” paid residency program that SJAA president Jackson Ryan believes will lead to “cross-pollination” of ideas between science journalists and scientists. “The science journalists will work on an independent project of their choosing. But also they'll be very close to the scientists there. They'll be in the same rooms as the scientists.  “It's about giving the opportunity to a science journalist, but also to scientists to be sharing ideas, upskilling and trying to work out what the gaps are for both of our professions.” Ryan believes the aim of the journalist in-residency program is to try and support the ecosystem of science journalism, admitting there are few opportunities for full-time science journalism work.  “There are very few science journalists working full time. We probably have about 20 a

Nine Sydney news director Simon Hobbs resigns amid cultural review

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Channel Nine’s Sydney news director Simon Hobbs has resigned, marking another high-profile departure following an independent review of Nine’s workplace culture that highlighted issues of bullying and sexual harassment, The Australian reported.  Hobbs, who has been with Nine for 12 years, announced his exit in an all-staff meeting this week. Closely aligned with former news boss Darren Wick, who resigned in March citing exhaustion after a complaint of inappropriate behaviour, Hobbs’ departure adds to a wave of exits.  Brisbane news director Amanda Paterson was recently fired, while former chair Peter Costello resigned after an incident at Canberra Airport. Chief executive Mike Sneesby also stepped down in September, and communications director Victoria Buchan was made redundant in October.

Today's Ten: Food costs fuel October inflation surge, rate cut hopes dim

By Pragadish Kirubakaran in Media News on
In October, India's retail inflation surged to a 14-month high of 6.2 per cent, driven predominantly by soaring food prices. The spike, reported by The Hindu's Vikas Dhoot and Times of India, marks an increase beyond the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent, rekindling economic concerns ahead of the festive season. While initially expecting inflation to cool and even exploring the possibility of rate cuts, the central bank now faces limited options as consumer inflation pressures weigh heavily on policy expectations. October’s inflationary pressure was largely fuelled by increased food prices, especially in categories like vegetables, fruits, and meats, as detailed by Aanchal Magazine for the Indian Express. In particular, seasonal shifts and uneven monsoon distribution impacted the vegetable supply chain, creating a sharp price rise that directly affected household budgets. This spike has generated concerns within the government, as food inflation
