The Press Council of India (PCI) recently celebrated National Press Day 2024 on Nov 16 at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, spotlighting the evolving challenges in the media landscape. The theme for this year's event, according to an official release, was 'Changing Nature of Press'. Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways, and Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressed the gathering virtually, focusing on key issues such as disinformation, fair compensation for content creators, algorithmic bias, and the impact of AI on intellectual property rights. Highlighting India’s vast media ecosystem, a Press Information Bureau report noted that Vaishnaw said, “The efforts made by the conventional media in creating content need to be fairly and suitably compensated.” He pointed out the power imbalance between digital platforms and traditional media, calling for a framework that ensures accountability and equitable content practices. Today’s Ten: Manipur on the boil again, allies withdraw support blaming govt failure

By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on
Violence and killings in Manipur continue unabated with the BJP government led by CM Biren Singh refusing to take any responsibility a day after violent protests rocked Imphal in the wake of the discovery of three bodies, part of a group of six abducted people, two more bodies — of a 61-year-old woman and a two-year-old boy — were found floating in a river at Lakhipur in Assam on Sunday. The five bodies found so far, including that of an eight-month-old baby, were likely of the missing Meitei family who armed militants snatched during an encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Manipur police in Jiribam on November 11. A 25-year-old woman, the mother of the two children, remains missing, reported The Hindu bureau. Despite the clear failure of the law and order machinery, there appears to be no attempt made by the BJP national leadership to bring in a more accountable administration in the disturbed state.
