Swan speaks on becoming The Australian’s tech editor

David Swan will be looking to make the technology section of The Australian compulsive reading as he takes over from the departing Supratim Adhikari.
Swan paid tribute to his long-time editor and colleague Adhikari, who is moving to Nine’s Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
“He’s got a fantastic analytical mind which comes from covering tech for over a decade and I’ve learnt plenty from him. 
“He'd been there [The Australian] for five years, with me, in the tech sector and it felt like the right time for him to try something new. We'd also worked together at Technology Spectator, so it wasn't too much of a surprise when he announced that he was moving on,” Swan says.
His appointment as The Australian’s new tech editor was a fairly straightforward process with Swan saying he was happy to “throw his hat into the ring, or whatever cliche you’d like to use,” and that he had the backing of the outgoing Adhikari.
“Supratim was pretty supportive of me taking over as editor and my appointment wasn't an issue. It wasn't like there was a battle for the position or anything like that,” he says.
Swan explains that he’s been given the freedom to widen the tech coverage and explore different ways of telling stories.
“I'm looking to continue our coverage of the tech sector but really look at the human impact many of those tech stories have. I have been given a lot of freedom by the paper's management to explore different ways of telling stories. 
“The other thing is, we're a national newspaper, so I'm really looking at investigating how changes in tech can impact the whole of the country, not just in small, local areas. We want it so anyone can pick up the paper and the tech section is a must-read part of the paper. We want content that will appeal to everyone around the country.”
He adds that he’s also pushing for a freelance budget which will be welcome news to the many freelance tech journalists out there.
“We've already begun the process to search for my replacement. Ideally, they'll be based in Sydney, while I'm based in Melbourne. I am also strongly pushing for a freelance budget so we can broaden our coverage.”

McLean takes on Ticker TV anchor gig

Alana McLean has joined digital media startup Ticker as its new presenter for 2PM show Ticker Newsroom.

Her show is one of eight new live programs on Ticker, which is expanding into the live news and analysis programming format. 

The other seven are Change Inc with David Banger, Spotee with Elio d’Amato, All Founders with Christian Cunningham and Laura Racky, The Trade Chick with Kiki Makrogiannis, The Impossible with Tima Elhajj and Belinda Agnew, The Frontline with Cate Schreck, and an unnamed ecommerce program hosted by Scott Kilmartin.

News Corp Australia community papers out of print

Sixty of News Corp Australia’s NSW, Victoria, Queensland and SA community papers are to be taken off the printing presses.

News Corp Australasia executive chairman Michael Miller said a drop in ad revenues due to the closure of commercial establishments under the COVID-19 situation forced a decision to end community title printing after 9 April 2020. 

The titles will be purely digital and their readers will be offered a 28-day free trial subscription, including access to the Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph, The Courier-Mail and The Advertiser’s websites. 

“During this unprecedented time it is imperative that we reduce costs while continuing to keep the community informed and doing all we can to retain jobs. The print suspension will allow us to assess the shape of the market itself and future conditions, taking into account how the Coronavirus situation unfolds in the coming period,” added Miller.

Cassidy returning to ABC

National broadcaster ABC has brought Barrie Cassidy back for eight episodes of interview show One Plus One.

The network revealed that Cassidy’s stint on the show, called One Plus One: Leadership, will begin on 9 April, with the discussions to focus on the various aspects of leadership. 

The show will be Cassidy’s first gig since stepping down last year as host of ABC’s Insiders.

The 9 April episode, in particular, will see Cassidy talk with Bawley Point Rural Fire Brigade Captain Charlie Magnuson. The fire chief is slated to recount his experiences leading the crew during the recent bushfires and what they had to do to survive.

Australian cricket team coach Justin Langer, APY Lands Executive Board Council chairwoman Sally Scales, and former ASIO director-general Denis Richardson are among the other scheduled guests.

Will and Mel joins FIVEaa drive sports show

Adelaide station FIVEaa has tapped the duo of Will Goodings and Mel Usher, AKA Will and Mel, for its drive sports show, alongside current hosts Rowey, Bicks and Jarrod.

Will and Mel will start the broadcast at the top of the hour and at every 20-minute mark with the latest COVID-19 information and news, plus updates on other news of the day. 

“FIVEaa will be the only local station in Drive and we believe it is vitally important that providing this service and content is of tremendous value to our listeners and clients as well as demonstrating our ability to be versatile and proactive in these times,” said FIVEaa station manager Craig Dunn.

Radio Sport gets off the air

NZME has closed down sports station Radio Sport.

NZME management stated that all Radio Sport programming would be replaced by syndicated Newstalk ZB content. It’s official Facebook and Twitter channels were also deleted. 

The decision was reportedly made in the absence of sporting activities due to the COVID-19 situation. It also ended Radio Sport’s long journey that started in the early 1990s as RNZ’s Sports Roundup. 

However, staff were informed there were no guarantees of Radio Sport coming back if and when the pandemic subsided. Instead, they were asked to discuss alternate roles with the NZME hierarchy. 

New Zealand media figures were left disappointed by the apparent end of Radio Sport.

AWOL undergoes rebrand

Junkee Media has adjusted its travel publication AWOL into a new support title with the tagline “Activities WithOut Leaving.”

Designed to help Australians cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, the repurposed AWOL offers information on various activities to keep people occupied at home and help them ease the stress of the situation. Channel director of travel Cassandra Vozzo will lead the effort. Kassia Byrnes has joined as editor.

The content will also include other material from parent firm Ooh! Media.
