Is anyone surprised about Meta’s decision to opt out of the media bargaining code? The writing has been on the wall since it railed against Canada’s implementation of a similar code. It’s inconceivable that Meta would not adopt a global position and clearly it does not like the possibility of having to prop up media organisations all over the world. The problem with the media bargaining code has always been based on the tenuous rationale that social media companies grift off traditional media. What we do know is that media companies genuinely gain from social/technology companies. A very significant portion of media companies’ traffic emanates from social sharing, and there is nothing more terrifying to most media outlets than a potential change of algorithm from Google or Facebook.
