Cindy McDougall - Victorian Ambassador for National Survivors' Day
Championing Courage, Inclusion, and Community
The team behind National Survivors' Day are thrilled to announce Cindy McDougall as an Ambassador for this year's National Survivors' Day - a day dedicated to recognising and commemorating the courage, strength, and resilience of survivors of sexual assault, institutional abuse, their supporters, and the whistle-blowers who have bravely spoken out across Australia.
With her extensive advocacy work, her lived experience, and commitment to inclusion, Cindy is the perfect fit to represent this important cause.
Cindy McDougall lives in regional Victoria, on the lands of Kirrae Wuurong people and is not only a dedicated mother of seven but also a tireless advocate for disability inclusion, particularly in sports. Cindy's advocacy has always focused on creating spaces where people of all abilities can feel seen, valued, and included. Her work shines a spotlight on the importance of sports inclusion, volunteerism, and community awareness, ensuring that everyone - regardless of their ability - has the opportunity to participate fully in life's most meaningful activities.
"National Survivors' Day is about recognising the personal journeys of individuals who have faced tremendous hardships and challenges, but it's also a day to celebrate their courage and their fight for justice. As a mother, domestic violence survivor, and a fierce advocate for those who are voiceless in having their stories heard, I'm honoured to take on this role and be a one of those voices in support of those who have endured so much," Cindy said in her first statement as Ambassador.
Cindy is no stranger to public engagement, having co-hosted the popular podcast Inclusion Talks alongside Dan Lonergan, where she discusses issues surrounding disability awareness, inclusion, and the challenges facing individuals living with disabilities.
Through her podcast, she has inspired countless individuals to reflect on how they can make their communities more inclusive and supportive. This experience will add a valuable dimension to her role as Ambassador, where she will use her platform to raise awareness and engage with survivors and their communities.
National Survivors' Day, the second Tuesday in November, 12 November 2024, is an opportunity for Australians to come together to show their solidarity and support for survivors of sexual assault and institutional abuse. The day recognises not only the personal strength of survivors but also the vital role played by their supporters and the brave whistle-blowers who have come forward to expose injustices.
Cindy's passion for inclusion, volunteerism, and supporting the causes that truly matter aligns perfectly with the ethos of National Survivors' Day. As a community advocate, she is committed to ensuring that survivors across the country feel supported and seen on this day of reflection and celebration.
We invite all Australians to join Cindy and the National Survivors' Day team in showing their support for survivors and their communities. Whether by hosting events, participating in activities, or simply taking a moment to listen and learn, every act of solidarity helps strengthen the movement towards justice, healing, and inclusion.
