The long-delayed national census, now slated for 2025, carries significant implications for India’s political, economic, and social landscape. A major element is its impact on Lok Sabha delimitation, potentially reshaping parliamentary constituencies to reflect demographic changes since the last census. Hindustan Times' Smriti Kak Ramachandran reported this census could influence the newly approved 33 per cent women’s reservation in Parliament, possibly implemented by 2029.
Caste data remains a contentious point. While some leaders and political parties are pushing for caste enumeration, seen as essential for fair resource allocation and social planning, the government is yet to confirm this inclusion.
