SC defends media freedom, questions HC gag orders

The Supreme Court on Monday underscored the importance of media freedom, stating that courts should not impose "gag orders" restricting it, according to Economic Times.
The remarks came during a hearing on Wikimedia Foundation’s plea challenging a Delhi High Court order directing the removal of a Wikipedia page titled Asian News International versus Wikimedia Foundation. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to ANI, which had filed a defamation case against Wikipedia.
Justice A.S. Oka questioned the Delhi High Court’s directive, noting that ordering the removal of content does not amount to contempt of court. Emphasising media freedom, he told ANI’s counsel, “Today it is Wikipedia, tomorrow it could be your turn.
