Re-engineering the newsroom to woo the smart news consumer

By Pradeep Damodaran in Media News on
When media entrepreneur Dilip Singh began his career as a journalist decades ago, independent television journalism was still a few years away and people who did not prefer to stick to government narratives had to get video magazines to get an independent take on the news of the day. "Like you had a text magazine like India Today and others, many outlets launched video magazines. India today also launched one called News Track. There was this video magazine called Vision Point, largely the Indian diaspora. Every month, we would work on different story, collect information and compile the story. At the end of the month, we'll make the master, and then we will have to go to the censor board to get their clearance. Only then only we could take out the copy in VHS, which could then go to the video parlour or people who had VCR. People having TV and VCR could only afford to see video magazine," Dilip Singh recalled. His first video story, an exclusive interview with the chief of the

Fact, Fiction and Clicks - Journalism in the age of content

By Suganthi Marimuthu in Media News on
As digital platforms reshape the media landscape, the once-clear distinction between journalism and content writing is fading. Influencing India spoke to journalists and content writers navigating this evolving space, where SEO, speed and clicks often take precedence over traditional reporting. “So for me, both have become the same,” said Saumya Rastogi, a journalist at Network18. “News is now viewed as content and both have merged, which is really a problem. The issue is that journalism should not be biased, while content is always brand-driven.” She added that although the two roles now overlap, disciplines like investigative journalism still demand skills AI and content writing can’t replicate. “AI is not replacing journalism; it’s enabling it.” Akshita Singh, sub-editor at India Today, echoed the concern. “Digital journalists are often labelled as content writers because their news articles are published on CMS platforms. While content writing is a valuable s

Ten days after a pile of unaccounted cash was allegedly discovered at the official Lutyens Delhi residence of the sitting judge of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma, the story continues to produce more twists and turns than an OTT potboiler. Just to recall the sequence of events as they unfolded, a fire broke out in the storeroom of Justice Varma's official Lutyens Delhi residence on March 14. The fire brigade arrived at 11:43 pm and found cash allegedly scattered among burnt jute sacks. No FIR was filed since no one was injured. However, videos of the cash were recorded and shared with senior Delhi Police officials, who subsequently informed the government and the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The total sum recovered reportedly amounted to Rs 15 crore and the CJI has formed a three-judge panel to probe further into the matter. Hot Off the Press CJI Sanjiv Khanna’s prompt move to order a judicial inquiry into charges of cash being found at Justice Yashwant Varma’s res

By Staff Writer in Media News on
Shareholders of Omnicom Group and Interpublic Group (IPG) have approved the proposed merger between the two advertising giants, marking a key step toward forming the world’s largest advertising network. The vote, held on March 18, paves the way for a consolidation that will surpass Publicis Groupe and WPP in scale. Announced in December 2024, the deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory clearance. Post-merger, Omnicom shareholders will hold 60.6 per cent of the combined entity, with IPG shareholders owning 39.4 per cent. Omnicom CEO John Wren described the approval as a “strong endorsement” of the deal’s strategic value. IPG CEO Phillippe Krakowsky said the merger would create a “customer-centric company” focused on long-term growth. The US Federal Trade Commission has requested additional information, raising potential antitrust concerns. Regulatory review could delay or alter the deal, as three-quarters of similar transactions in rece
