Press release rewrites are protected by copyright, says expert

Claims that editorial content based off press releases is not protected by copyright have been labelled “fundamentally wrong” by the executive director of the Australian Copyright Council, Fiona Phillips, although she admits publishers and journalists have “little leverage” against copied content unless they’re willing to go through with litigation.
The suggestion that ‘unoriginal content’ sourced from press releases and vendor materials could not be subject to copyright laws regardless of how much they had been re-worked, was made last week by Smarthouse publisher David Richards on this website, after he was accused by technology website TechGeek of plagiarism.
