Broadcasters brace for financial strain after Supreme Court upholds dual taxation

The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of dual taxation on broadcasters, allowing both central service tax and state-level entertainment tax to be imposed simultaneously—a move set to increase financial pressure across the media industry, according to The Economic Times.
The 321-page ruling, delivered by Justices B.V. Nagarathna and N. Kotiswar Singh, concludes that the two taxes apply to distinct aspects of broadcasting—service and entertainment—and do not overlap. The judgment resolves a long-standing legal dispute over whether states could levy entertainment tax on services already subject to central taxation under service tax laws, The Economic Times reported.
