ANI faces backlash over YouTube copyright strikes

Asian News International (ANI) has come under fire for issuing copyright strikes against YouTube creators using its news footage, prompting criticism from digital creators, activists, and Member of Parliament Saket Gokhale.
In an open letter shared on microblogging site X, Gokhale has written to YouTube India, accusing ANI of “extortion” and attempting to suppress dissent. He argues that content such as public statements and event coverage should fall under fair dealing and not attract takedown notices.
“Non-creative news footage, such as public event coverage or statements by public figures, should be protected under fair use or fair dealing,” he stated.
