As architecture continuously evolves, TONIC Design is proud to mark its 15th year in business, transforming and enhancing the quality of lives in Brisbane, interstate and beyond.
Managing Director Matt Riley is proud to reach this milestone with a team that constantly delivers purposeful architecture and interiors that are not beguiled by ‘current style trends’ or fashion. Riley believes architects are, by their very nature, pioneers and creative inventors.
“We have not sought to create a visible ‘TONIC STYLE’ reference but rather have the aesthetic of the projects born out of a response to the people who inhabit them, the site where it stands, and a functional response to climate, light, ventilation and purpose with regard to materiality,” Riley said.
“We’re always happy to try a material or product in a different way. For example, we once designed a series of houses using the traditional project home construction technique of timber frame and truss roof for budget reasons. But we turned the trusses upside down to get a vaulted ceiling and skillion roof form.”
Fifteen years down the track, Riley feels strongly that TONIC Design keeps on top of the new techniques, products or finishes that are on the market. It’s this continued need for excellence that pushes him, as well as his team – many of whom have been with TONIC Design for a decade.
“We’re all about finding new and inventive ways to use new and old products for the advantage of the project. This passes through to our clients, whom we find look to engage an architect for the design but also because they themselves have an interest in how things are put together.”
When it comes to plans for the future, the team at TONIC Design recognises they’ve been able to achieve sustained growth without sacrificing who they are and how they collaborate with their clients.
“We’re looking to make considered steps to evolve our brand into new areas of architecture, interiors and design. With my Practice Manager Kimberley Alford in charge of managing the brand and day to day administration, and myself and the rest of our team focusing on the front-end client relationships through architecture, interiors and design, we have the business on track to welcome a few more people to the team over the next 12 months.”
TONIC Design is also excited to launch JOYNT, TONIC Objects’ first collection of custom-made plywood furniture pieces that are easily delivered in a flat pack, ready to construct, and quickly formed by hand.
And what inspires the team after all these years?
“We are motivated when we see a happy client enjoying the space we have helped them create. It is so satisfying to know the work we have created for our clients has in some way enriched the lives of people and been of a high quality," said Riley.
"There’s no better way to celebrate the past 15 years than alongside those who have been a part of our success and on 9 March the TONIC family will join with our favourite four Cs - our clients, colleagues, contractors and consultants - for a special birthday event at our design studio."
