Actian Delivers Record-Breaking Performance on Cisco Unified Computing System

REDWOOD CITY, CA, April 12, 2012 – Actian Corporation today announced that its Vectorwise analytic database has achieved record-breaking performance for the Transaction Processing Performance Council’s TPC-H benchmark. Running on a single Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) C250 M2 Extended-Memory Server, Vectorwise delivered the best performance and price-performance for 2-processor servers in 100GB¹ and 300GB² scale factors. These results yet again demonstrate performance for a broad range of business intelligence and decision support systems that were previously not possible without expensive software and hardware.

Based on the newly published TPC-H results, the Cisco UCS C250 M2 Extended-Memory Server running Vectorwise 2.0.1, delivered best overall performance and best price-performance in 100GB scale factor in non-cluster category.  The combined solution offers a record-breaking 332,481 QphH@100GB (Query–per-hour performance metric) and $0.15 USD per QphH@100GB (Price-per-performance metric), based on a $49,644 system cost over a three year time period.

Also, the 300GB scale factor of the Cisco UCS C250 M2 Extended-Memory Server delivered two-processor performance and price-performance records with 331,658 QphH@300GB and 0.34 USD per QphH @300GB based on a total system cost of $110,951 USD over three years. Both Cisco UCS configurations are currently available through Cisco and its certified channel partners.

About the TPC-H Benchmark

The TPC Benchmark™H (TPC-H) is a decision support benchmark. It consists of a suite of business oriented ad-hoc queries and concurrent data modifications. The queries and the data populating the database have been chosen to have broad industry-wide relevance. This benchmark illustrates decision support systems that examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions.

The performance metric reported by TPC-H is called the TPC-H Composite Query-per-Hour Performance Metric (QphH@Size), and reflects multiple aspects of the capability of the system to process queries. These aspects include the selected database size against which the queries are executed, the query processing power when queries are submitted by a single stream and the query throughput when queries are submitted by multiple concurrent users. The TPC-H Price/Performance metric is expressed as $/QphH@Size.
