Ever wondered if there is a trick to getting the right type of dining table for your home? Well, according to Australia's leading interior designer - there is and it comes down the shape.
Kellie Richardson is a highly respected interior designer, creator of the term 'Botox for your home' and founder of Melbourne-based home design company Kurved by Design. Richardson emphasises that for believers and followers of Feng Shui, round dining tables should not be placed in homes.
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of geomancy and it uses energy flow to harmonise and balance peace and prosperity in the home.
"As an interior designer, I am drawn to Feng Shui because integrating these elements into a home creates a space that is not only natural but also extremely aesthetic," she said.
Trusted by clients and respected by those in the industry, Richardson is particularly well known for incorporating elements and principles of Feng Shui into her design concepts and she shares some of her tips on why a round dining table may not be the best option for many homes.
In 2020, Richardson won the global CEO Excellence award in 2020 for 'Best Property Styling and Interior Design Business'. She is regularly asked to comment on all matters relating to Feng Shui and the home.
"In Feng Shui, the shape of furniture and objects in a space can influence the flow of energy (qi) and the overall harmony and balance of the environment," Richardson said.
"While round dining tables can be aesthetically pleasing and promote a sense of equality among diners, there are some considerations in Feng Shui that suggest why they may not be ideal."
Lack of stability
"Round tables lack the stability and grounding associated with square or rectangular tables. In Feng Shui, square or rectangular shapes are often preferred for dining tables because they symbolise stability, structure, and support. A round table may not provide the same sense of groundedness," Richardson said.
"This is why it is always a good idea to opt for square of rectangle shaped tables, because they provide the stability and groundedness that adds value to the energy of a home. Select wood where possible and avoid glass top tables."
Disrupted energy flow
"The circular shape of a round table can disrupt the flow of energy around the dining area. In Feng Shui principles, sharp corners are believed to create 'poison arrows' or negative energy, but they can also facilitate a more defined and directed flow of energy. A round table may disperse energy unevenly, potentially leading to scattered or disrupted qi," Richardson said.
Lack of directionality
"Feng Shui emphasises the importance of directional alignment and orientation within a space. Square or rectangular tables often have clear directional alignment, with one side considered the 'head' of the table," Richardson added.
"This can promote a sense of focus and organisation during meals. In contrast, a round table lacks clear directional orientation, which may lead to a more diffused or scattered energy during dining."
Limited space utilisation
"Round tables may not efficiently utilise space, especially in smaller dining areas. They can occupy more floor space compared to square or rectangular tables of similar seating capacity," Richardson said.
"In Feng Shui, maximising space and promoting efficient energy flow are essential considerations for creating a harmonious environment. Always opt for a bigger table if possible and ensure there is plenty of space around it to maximise energy flow."
Key things to consider
"Your dining room is a meeting place where you gather with family and friends to share meals and create memories. Consider placing a mirror in your dining room. According to Feng Shui principles, a well-placed mirror that reflects your dining table is a symbol of abundance. It will bring more food, more joy and more friends into your home," Richardson said.
"Choose high back dining chairs and ensure you have an even number. Chairs with a solid back are advisable, especially if they're rounded at the top in the shape of an upside-down horseshoe. It's all about keeping the energy gently flowing and providing a feeling of stability which encourages people to feel comfortable and stay and enjoy themselves."
Richardson added that while these Feng Shui principles suggest potential drawbacks to using round dining tables, it's important to remember that individual preferences and practical considerations should also guide furniture choices. Ultimately, the most important aspect of Feng Shui is creating a space that feels comfortable, functional, and harmonious for those who inhabit it.
