Plastic Recycling Hub receives a NSW Government grant to commission additional recycling equipment, redirecting over 1,400 tonnes per year of plastic waste from landfill.

Announcement posted by Plastic Recycling HUB 28 Jul 2023

Plastics Recycling Hub enables the circular economy, supporting manufacturers to use recycled plastic in their products and an option for organisations to recycle rather than send to landfill

Condell Park, NSW - 27 July, 2023 - Delta Plastic Pty Ltd (trading as Plastics Recycling Hub), a leading Australian recycler of rigid plastics was one of nine projects to receive funding to improve plastic recycling infrastructure across NSW. The grant of $218,000 will support the commissioning of additional shredding machines to process rigid High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) into HDPE pellets.

Rigid plastics include hospital plastics, household bins, milk crates, big drums, PVC & polyethylene pipes and orange road barriers. These products are much heavier and denser than soft plastics like plastic bags and water bottles and contribute to a large amount of landfill. For example, the smallest bin that is recycled equates to 10kgs of plastic.

Plastics Recycling Hub’s plant in Condell Park accepts waste from small and large organisations including local councils and large building companies. This waste is shredded, granulated and melted into new clean pellets through machines that operate continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pellets are then shipped to manufacturers so it can be remade into new plastic products.

Mario Hilmi, managing director and co-founder for Delta Plastics / Plastics Recycling Hub said, “This funding from the NSW government acknowledges that they are serious about realising the circular economy and reducing the overall plastics that end up in landfill. This grant allows Plastics Recycling Hub to support our entire customer base, so that we can take all of their rigid plastic waste now at greater volumes than ever before. This will provide central Sydney a true HUB for all rigid plastic recycling.”

Hilmi added, “Our biggest challenge to recycling of more rigid plastic waste is awareness in customers that there is an alternative. What most organisations don’t realise is that it costs less to recycle than it costs to dump. Plastic Recycling Hub has a streamlined process and simple service model for waste delivery. We offer turnkey solutions for larger customers with sustainability goals like Coates, CPB, Reece, Confluence and Sydney Water to make it easy to recycle their waste. Previously multiple council bins were exported overseas, now in partnership with Cleanaway, Veolia, JJ Richards and Remondis we are now reprocessing those bins in Australia and returning them to councils.”

“I’m just so pleased that our vision four years ago to deliver a solution that deters landfill for plastics and creates a viable solution for re-manufacturing plastics has become a reality through Plastics Recycling Hub. It means that we also continue to support our local community with more employment options as our operations grow,” said Hilmi.

Plastic Recycling Hub continues to expand its operations in Australia, with a recycling plant in Victoria, a joint venture with Remondis in Newcastle and further expansion plans in other states to be announced later this year.
