Melbourne Boomers shoot for top prize

Announcement posted by Melbourne Boomers 23 Mar 2022

Home court advantage needs home crowd this Thursday

The Boomers will head into the first game of the semi-finals on Thursday 24 March against Adelaide Lightning at Melbourne Sports Centre. This will be an opportunity for Melbourne crowds to witness this star team in action.

After a tremendous season and dominant (107-52) showing against the Canberra Capitals last Saturday, the Melbourne Boomers have broken decade long drought and won their first minor premiership since 2011.

“It’s amazing to be in this position with the Boomers primed for success.

“The synergy amongst the team is palpable. I couldn’t be prouder. Their teamwork, attitude and hard work throughout the season is what has got them here,” said Boomers’ head coach Guy Molloy.

“On a personal level, it would be an incredible career highlight to see the Boomers win the championship, after nine years as head coach.”

This season has also seen a career high point for one Boomers player in particular. Team captain and Australian Opal Cayla George played her 300th game on 13 March against Adelaide Lightening. She was able to celebrate with her home crowd last week during the inaugural Indigenous Round, where she landed baskets with 100 per cent accuracy.

George said, “The greatest part of the game for me is playing alongside these talented women. Going into the semi-finals, we are ready to bring our best!”

The WNBL finals will be the some of the last opportunities for fans to see favourites Cayla George and Tess Madgan play in Australia until the FIBA World Cup in Sydney later this year, and Ezi Magbegor before she heads to the US to play in the WNBA for the Seattle Storm.
