PacMags sale to Bauer Media OK’d

Pacific MagazinesBauer Media has been given the ACCC’s approval to acquire Pacific Magazines from Seven West Media.

The watchdog stated that Bauer’s $40m offer would not lessen competition as some of the content on both Bauer and Pacific’s titles are acquired from other sources. The negotiations began in October 2019, with part of the deal seeing Bauer pay Seven West Media $6.6m in advertising rights fees over the next three years, on top of the $40m cash offer. 

“We note that some magazine titles have already closed, and others are likely to follow, regardless of this deal. Ultimately, we determined that although there is a notable level of competition between the particular print titles, the transaction was not likely to substantially lessen competition because publishers in other media, particularly online publishers, will increasingly compete with Bauer,” the ACCC added.

Bauer Media and Pacific Magazines are aiming to complete the deal by 9 April 2020.

Triple M sport shows stay on air

The Triple M Network’s AFL and NRL-oriented shows are still set for broadcast despite the COVID-19 situation.

On the AFL front, the company stated that for Victoria and SA, the Triple M Footy Saturday Rub with James Brayshaw, Brian Taylor, Wayne Carey, Damian Barrett, and Billy Brownless is on air 12 noon to 2PM AEST. It will be followed at 2PM to 5PM by replays of classic Grand Finals; tomorrow’s episode, in particular, will cover the 1989 Geelong/Hawthorn showdown.   

NSW and Queensland’s NRL audience will have the Saturday Sin Bin with Paul Kent, Gorden Tallis, Anthony Maroon, and James Hooper, from 12 noon to 3PM AEST. The 3PM-5PM block will have replays of the NRL’s most heated games, starting with Game III of last year’s State of Origin.

Judith Ireland has wrapped up her affairs at the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) and The Age.

She Tweeted that she was leaving to join The Conversation next month as its new deputy editor for politics and society.

Ireland spent nine years with both SMH and The Age, being based out of the Canberra bureau.

3AW fixes AFL weekend broadcast schedule

The suspension of this year’s AFL season has prompted 3AW to reprogram the original coverage plans, reported Radioinfo.

The station revealed Nights with Denis Walter will be set for the Thursday and Friday night game slots from 8PM to midnight, following Money News.

For Saturdays, Rex Hunt is hosting special editions of Footy Nightline from 8PM to midnight, capping off a long day with Weekend Break with Grubby, the Twilight Zone with Mark Allen and David Schwarz and Saturday Night with Dr Sally Cockburn.

Instead of live broadcasts during the 5PM-7PM slot on Sundays, Daniel Harford and Jimmy Bartel are teaming up on specials of Sunday Sport.

News Corp Australia adds COVID-19 daily content

News Corp Australia’s major dailies The Daily Telegraph, Melbourne Herald Sun, The Courier-Mail, and The Advertiser are tackling the COVID-19 situation in a new section called “HiberNation.”

The eight-page section (pictured) aims to guide readers coping with the pandemic on issues such as healthcare, education and jobs, and the economy. The main angle in today’s edition, for example, showcases family activities to occupy children in light of the government’s recommendation for kids to be kept home from school.

Cranney passes away

Former radio presenter Stuart Cranney is dead at 65 years old.

The Triple M Network announced that he passed from a year-long bout with cancer. 

Cranney had recently been the host of his own morning show on C91.3FM. He started with Double J Sydney in 1975, and had been with C91.3 since 2001. 

“Stuart loved radio but even more than that, he loved his listeners. Stuart’s joy came from entertaining people and making them smile. He asked for nothing more. Although slowed down by illness in recent months, Stuart continued to come to work and do what he did best. He was a friend, a mentor and an inspiration,” read part of an official statement from C91.3.

Sunraysia Daily shuts down

Mildura regional newspaper the Sunraysia Daily has been forced to stop operations.

The paper’s parent firm, Elliott Newspaper Group, stated that the COVID-19 situation forced a closure to the company’s printing operations in Mildura, Swan Hill, and Kerang, but will be reactivated once the crisis has passed. 

As a result, the final issue of the Sunraysia Daily, as well as those of Sunraysia Life, The Guardian in Swan Hill, the Gannawarra Times, and the Loddon Times, will be on 28 March.
