Mediaweek puts an end to print issues

Mediaweek LogoMedia trade sheet Mediaweek is doing away with its print edition at the end of the year, staff writer James Manning announced on Friday.

The company stated that the move is in response to audience requests for a “digital-only model” and increased online advertisements.

In addition to the 12 magazines still available for the last quarter, Mediaweek is planning special sections with them that reflect on the publication’s 27-year history. The October issues will cover the history of the company during the 1990s. The 2000-2010 period will be featured for the November editions while the finale issues in December cover company tidbits for the past six years.

On the digital side of things, Mediaweek’s Morning Report will still be out daily while a new 2018 premium subscription package is to be laid down soon.

Nelmes moves on from 9Honey

Amy Nelmes has stepped down as 9Honey Travel’s travel editor.

The Nine Network stated that Nelmes was going freelance after five years on the rolls. She was with Bauer Media for a couple of years before going over to Nine. Several publications, including Marie Claire, Woman’s Day AU and NZ, and a number of British outfits have arrayed assignments for her.

9Honey has appointed current 9Honey Kitchen deputy editor Katherine Scott as Nelmes’ successor, with her new assignment now focusing on ideas for holiday celebrations, and associated travel news, among other content types.

Garlick to exit Cosmo

Kelsey Garlick is finishing up her time as managing editor of Cosmopolitan.

Garlick stated that she is leaving at the end of the year after six months on the job to go on freelance assignments. She has been with Bauer Media for five of the previous seven years. Before her accession as Cosmo’s managing editor, she had spent two years as chief sub-editor.

Current editorial coordinator Joshua Joynes has been tasked to handle all of Garlick’s associated correspondence.

Smith out of Channel Nine

Brendan Smith will not finish the year with Channel Nine-Adelaide.

Smith recently stepped down from the network for undisclosed reasons. He had been with the network for five years, during which he also covered mid-North Coast news and sports for NBN TV. He even played bit roles in a few movies and television shows, plus some commercials.

The network has yet to appoint Smith’s replacement.

Laura Wilson to leave InStyle

Laura Wilson has decided to step down as InStyle Australia’s acting beauty director.

Wilson said she had tendered her notice, wherein she is slated to finish her duties on February 6, 2018.

Wilson carries over a decade of experience on the beauty circuit, which includes editorships at OK!, New Idea, and NW magazines, and TV appearances discussing a range of beauty topics. She is one of Pacific Magazines' well-known authorities in the beauty/style business, having worked as New Idea's fashion market editor and assistant and served up to seven years total. Her dedication to the job has earned her invites to cover leading events such as NY Fashion Week 2015 and also meet with fashion celebrities such as Miranda Kerr.

Stuff builds national correspondent pool

Stuff New Zealand has tapped a number of experienced hands to be part of a new National Correspondents squad.

A National Correspondent will be primarily focused on “priority” beats such as nature, health, climate change, sport, environmental issues, and Maori affairs, the publication stated.  

Dana Johannsen recently stepped down from the NZ Herald to join the sports desk, along with Carmen Parahi, who finished a producer job for Maori TV’s Native Affairs. Freelance writer Michelle Duff has been included on the staff roll, while newsroom manager Steve Kilgallon is heading back out on the field. Charlie Mitchell and Katie Kenny also got the call-up after working some time in other departments.

“We've promised these journalists the time and support to produce inventive, impactful reporting on a national scale,” said Fairfax NZ editorial director Mark Stevens.

Bound Round unveils online magazine

Online family vacations company Bound Round has rolled out a new quarterly online magazine for the Australian market.

Available on Virgin Australia’s inflight entertainment service or on the Bound Round website, Travel Bound features travel articles from family travel experts Aleney de Winter, Carla Grosetti, Flip Byrnes, Jac Taylor, Sheridan Rhodes, and Stephanie Williams. Tatyana Leonov is the editor.

The pilot issue will have articles about domestic travel and the summer season, but future content will tackle various domestic and international destinations.

NZ Herald takes on new staff

The New Zealand Herald is starting 2018 with two new staff members on the roll.

The paper stated that Simon Wilson is signing on as senior writer. He is coming over from The Spinoff Auckland, where he served as writer and later editor. Wilson’s last major publication was Metro, where he

served as editor before stepping down in 2015.

Keith Ng is coming on as the Herald’s new data journalist, taking over from Harkanwal Singh who is going back to school for advanced studies. Ng carries with him years of experience at ChewyData and ClinkID.
