Bingemann exits The Australian for NBN exec producer gig

Mitchell Bingemann finished out his final day at The Australian yesterday, after more than nine years at the masthead.
 
In his new role, Bingemann joins NBN where he will work as an executive producer.
 
“I'll be digging into the business and roll out to find and write stories for the company,” said Bingemann.
 
“After nine years at the Oz and about 15 in journalism I decided now was as good a time as any to branch out and learn some new skills. It's going to be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it.”
 
In his time at the The Australian, Bingemann has taken on a number of topics including technology, business, aviation and most recently media. Now, in his new role, Bingemann will be tackling some of those same stories, but from the other side of the fence.
 
Bingemann’s work in IT journalism was recognised in 2015 with the very first ACS & National Press Club award for Excellence in IT Journalism. For that accolade, judges noted his deep investigation and clear explanation of data retention legislation. He also walked away with the Lizzie award for Best News Journalist in 2011.
 
“It's difficult to pinpoint the highlights - there's been a few! In terms of stories, some the most memorable have been investigations into the NBN and the government's data retention scheme,” said Bingemann.
 
“More recently my move to cover the media sector has been really enjoyable particularly covering the fallout from the Amber Harrison and Tim Worner affair and the collapse of Ten.”
 
On leaving The Australian, Bingemann noted that he would miss the people there the most.
 
“The OZ gets a fair bit of flak but it employs some of the best journos in the country who also happen to be excellent, creative, smart people,” said Bingemann.
 
“I've made lots of lifelong friends here. Aside from the people, nothing compares to the buzz in the newsroom when a big local or international news event breaks. It's very special to have been a part of that.”

Maguire to edit SMH and The Age

Fairfax Media’s Tory Maguire has become the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age’s new national editor.

Maguire landed the assignment following the end of HuffPost Australia’s partnership with Fairfax Media late last year. She was the HuffPost’s editor-in-chief for two years.

Her remit now covers federal politics, business and international coverage for the above papers. She is slated to begin on April 16, 2018, and will report to Australian Metro Publishing group executive editor James Chessell.

“Tory is an outstanding journalist with around two decades’ experience editing and reporting news and federal politics. She is a proven leader in digital publishing with an excellent track record of leading newsrooms and producing engaging journalism. Our newsrooms will benefit greatly from Tory’s expertise,” said Chessell.

Stensholt off to The Oz

John Stensholt is coming to The Australian as a new staff member, wrapping up nearly 20 years with Fairfax Media.

He confirmed his impending exit in a Tweet earlier this month. The Australian confirmed that Stensholt will be assigned  to a project currently codenamed “The Stensholt Index”.

He is best known in Fairfax Media for reporting for the Australian Financial Review and editing the paper’s Rich List.

Doctor joins B&T reporting team

Daisy Doctor has started a new reporter job at B&T magazine.

Doctor came over from Travel Weekly, where she recently finished up six months as online editor.

“I’m so excited to begin working, reporting on and being a part of the mediascape in Australia. Working under the leadership of editor John Bastick and news editor Huntley Mitchell, I can’t wait to begin shaking up this ever-changing space,” said Doctor, who can be found over LinkedIn.

Healey to host ABC North West WA breakfast

2SER breakfast host Nic Healey completed his final show this morning, as he prepares to move to Karratha next month for a new gig — some 5,000km away — hosting the ABC North West WA breakfast show.
 
Speaking to Influencing, Healey said that working at 2SER full-time for the past 22-months has been a “shock to the system,” especially after two decades specialising in print and online media.
 
“It’s got a huge footprint in Sydney and a remarkable history, but there’s an energy to it because of its volunteer base that is just going to be really hard to replicate anywhere,” said Healey.
 
“You fall in love with it, it’s a remarkable station.”
 
After years of volunteering, Healey joined the station full-time in 2016 and quickly found himself in the deep-end due to the NSW state election, with some of his first segments involving speaking to some of the more fringe parties in the running.

Shine comes back to ABC News

Tyson Shine is working once more at ABC.

The network stated that Shine is a supervising producer with the Sydney bureau. He signed on recently after returning from Qatar, where he had spent the past year as correspondent at Al-Jazeera English. He left ABC in 2015 to start with Al-Jazeera in London.

Ziffer takes on TV business beat

Daniel Ziffer (pictured, left) has started TV reporting duties for ABC Melbourne.

Ziffer recently stood down from six years of being a senior producer at 774 ABC Radio’s Mornings with Jon Faine, turning the job over to Katrina Palmer. He will now tackle the Melbourne business community and also report on national news for ABC’s The Business and the 7PM news show.

Bauer Media reveals Audience Development squad

Bauer Media’s digital content for the women’s lifestyle and fashion front are set for increased direction with the announcement of a new audience development team.

The company stated that Annabel Hodges will helm the team as Audience Development Director, with her remit focusing on boosting the company's digital growth strategy. New senior social media editor Jennifer Kang, who is tasked with handling social media campaigns and content, will report to her.

Nikki Chowdhury will be the team co-ordinator, reporting to both Kang and Hodges.

Monica De Luna will manage email/newsletter marketing strategy as audience development manager.
