ABC inks new business deal with CBC

ABC logoThe ABC has struck a new three-year creative and business partnership with Canadian national broadcaster CBC.

The MOU will have both companies teaming up on new podcasts and new drama, comedy, and children’s TV series. Co-finance and sales options are also factored in the deal, as well as a new education initiative for schools in Australia and Canada on misinformation and how to combat them.

“In a world of global media giants, the outstanding and accessible content produced by like-minded public broadcasters is more important than ever,” said ABC managing director David Anderson.

“This collaboration between the ABC and CBC will drive our limited resources further, leveraging our strengths to create and share distinctive content that connects with audiences at home and overseas.”

Community News publications Kwinana Courier and Weekend Courier have transitioned to purely digital mastheads.

The Community News Group published the Kwinana Courier’s final print issue (pictured) on 28 June 2019 after a run of at least 30 years. All content specific to the two newspapers will be found on

Wallbank exits Mumbrella for ACS

After two years at Mumbrella, news editor Paul Wallbank has now swapped the hip and happening streets of Chippendale for the Australian Computer Society’s (ACS) Barangaroo digs.

In his new role as the ACS’ senior technology editor, Wallbank will be responsible for generating stories for the society’s publications, constructing public policy positions and relieving Information Age editor Roulla Yiacoumi whenever she is on leave. 

He made the announcement last week in a blog post which shed some light on his time at Mumbrella, and in particular, the challenges associated with modern online journalism.

“Modern digital journalism is not for the lazy or the faint hearted,” said Wallbank. 

“The tyranny of a daily newsletter means the editors are always hungry for stories and stressing about scooping the opposition.”

Trade Media loses MCV Pacific, Develop Pacific and Esports Pro Oceania

Trade Media revealed today that its responsibility for MCV Pacific, Develop Pacific and Esports Pro Oceania will conclude at the end of the week. 

In a post to Trade Media’s website, director Joel van Daal said that though the six-year partnership with Data Team and Future Publishing is ending, Trade Media’s own The Influence brand will continue, as will the Australian Games Awards. 

For now, it is not known if the three industry titles will continue on into the future. 

“On a personal note, I would like to thank all of our sponsors, advertisers, and partners who have supported us over the years. I am incredibly proud of the work we have done in raising the profile of the ANZ Industry and its members, especially across our Women In Games and Game As You Are programs, the 30 Under Thirty, and of course, the MCV Pacific Awards, Esports Pro Oceania Awards, and Interface @ PAX Aus,” said Van Daal.

Blakkarly named as SBS’ SA correspondent

SBS Sydney reporter Jarni Blakkarly is transferring to Adelaide to be the network’s SA correspondent.

He said in a Tweet that he is beginning the role next month. 

Blakkarly has been with SBS since he joined the Sydney studios in early 2017 on a journalism cadetship, then started handling investigative duties. 

He has previously worked at Reuters and as an associate producer for ABC.

Mackay on court duty at ABC Darwin

Melissa Mackay has started the second half of 2019 with a new job at ABC Darwin.

She stated in a tweet that she had finished up tackling the courthouse beat with 9News and would cross over to ABC.

Mackay moved up to Darwin in October 2017 after three months of internships with WIN TV and 10.

Hunkin leads Australian Gourmet Traveller

The editor’s chair at Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine has changed hands from Sarah Oakes to Joanna Hunkin (pictured).

Hunkin will relocate from Auckland to Sydney and assume the post from acting editor Amy Reedy on 2 September 2019. Oakes, who led the magazine since October 2017, informed management that she would not return after finishing maternity leave.

Bauer Media GM for publishing Sally Eagle said Hunkin’s experience put her as the best candidate for the job. She spent five years with the New Zealand Herald, four years with One News, and the past five years with NZME, where she is wrapping up as head of entertainment and lifestyle.

Canberra DAB+ radio goes live

DAB+ radio services have been formally activated in Canberra .

The Commercial Radio Association of Australia (CRAA) confirmed that local stations 2CA, 2CC, Mix 106.3, and Hit 104.7 are now on digital broadcasts, while new digital-only stations have begun airing. These include music outfits KIX Country, My Canberra Digital, and Coles Radio.

DAB+ radio services have been at low-power settings in the capital since 2010.

“Commercial radio has been broadcasting on the AM band in Canberra since 1931 and on FM since 1988. Now with the official move to digital broadcasting, radio can keep innovating and offering better services to listeners,” said CRAA CEO Joan Warner.
